NRC addresses Port Harcourt-Aba train breakdown, says service resumes Sept 9
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has issued a formal statement addressing the recent suspension of the Port Harcourt–Aba Train Service following a mechanical breakdown that left passengers stranded near Imo River on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
A viral video circulating on social media showed visibly distressed passengers trekking long distances and crossing a stream in search of alternative transportation after the train suddenly halted en route from Aba to Port Harcourt at approximately 4:22 p.m.
According to the NRC, the train developed an “unusual fault” which defied immediate repair efforts by engineers on site. In response, a rescue locomotive, Loco 2306, was swiftly deployed to retrieve the stranded train. While some passengers opted for alternative travel arrangements, others were safely transported back to their original departure points.
The affected train has since been towed to Port Harcourt, where it is undergoing comprehensive repairs. The NRC assured the public that all necessary checks and maintenance are being conducted to prevent future disruptions.
Passengers impacted by the incident are encouraged to visit NRC stations in Port Harcourt or Aba with proof of payment for a possible refund or a replacement ticket.
“We appreciate the concerns raised by the general public and deeply value the patience and understanding shown by our passengers during this period,” the NRC stated.
The corporation also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing service delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda and its ongoing Rail Revitalization Programme, aiming to provide safer and more reliable transport nationwide.
Normal operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba route are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the NRC stated.
The statement was signed by Dr. Onyedikachi S. Onovo, District Public Relations Officer for the Eastern District, on behalf of the management.
