NRC beefs up security around derailed Abuja-Kaduna train
The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed the derailment on Tuesday of its passenger train on Abuja-Kaduna route.
A passenger train was travelling from Abuja to Kaduna when it derailed on Tuesday morning, causing panic among passengers and their loved ones.
It was gathered that the incident occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11am en route to Kaduna.
A passenger on board the train described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling to safety in confusion.
In a statement, the NRC confirmed the train derailment involving its Kaduna-bound AKTS train.
Managing Director of the corporation, Dr Kayode Opeifa, who signed the statement, said the incident occurred at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station.
He said emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have already been mobilised.
“Full compliment of security already on ground as effort is ongoing to move all passengers on train back to Abuja safely,” he said.
Security sources report that military personnel had been deployed in the area to assist in evacuating stranded passengers.
