NRC steps up war on corruption, inaugurates new ACTU squad

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, on Friday reaffirmed the corporation’s renewed push towards transparency, integrity, and internal accountability as he inaugurated a newly reconstituted Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU).

Speaking at the event in Lagos, Opeifa said the NRC was entering a new era of growth and public scrutiny, making it imperative to strengthen ethical standards and establish stronger internal controls that can withstand operational expansion.

“Today marks another strong step in our collective journey to building a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability within our corporation,” he said.

Opeifa said, acknowledging the presence and support of officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), “Our collaboration with the ICPC, especially our Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, continues to strengthen our internal governance structure.”

The NRC boss emphasised that as the corporation continues its modernisation drive, it must equally fortify the systems that guard against misconduct. He described the ACTU—established by the ICPC across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)—as a strategic instrument for preventing corruption and bolstering public confidence.

He charged members of the newly inaugurated unit to uphold the highest ethical standards, ensure compliance with regulations, report violations promptly, and champion awareness on anti-corruption obligations among staff.

“The management will provide a work environment where accountability thrives and where officers understand that corruption, misconduct and unethical behaviours have no place in the NRC of today,” he added.

Representing the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Mr. Chukwurah Alexander—also represented by the Lagos State Head of Operations, Dr. Florence Barry—described ACTU as a government-recognised anti-corruption mechanism designed to identify systemic weaknesses and entrench ethical compliance across MDAs.

He congratulated the appointees and urged them to execute their duties with diligence and professionalism, warning them against actions that could compromise the integrity of the unit.

In her acceptance speech, the newly appointed ACTU Chairperson for the NRC, Mrs. Clara Ndibe, pledged that the unit would work to strengthen internal processes, deepen regulatory compliance, and reinforce public trust in the corporation.

Leaders of the Nigerian Union of Railway Workers (NUR), Comrade Innocent Ajiji, and the Senior Staff Workers Union, Comrade Marcel Okeke, also expressed the commitment of the workforce to supporting the renewed anti-corruption drive.

The inauguration marks a significant step in the NRC’s broader effort to rebuild public confidence and embed transparent practices across its expanding operations.
