NSA, Security Chiefs to address Nation over Trump’s military threat

The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and Nigeria’s top security chiefs are set to brief the media this afternoon in response to recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened to deploy American troops to Nigeria over alleged terrorist attacks targeting Christians.

The announcement was made by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, during the monthly National Joint Security Press Briefing held in Abuja. He stated that the upcoming media engagement would provide a comprehensive response to the genocide allegations and clarify Nigeria’s position on its internal security operations.

“This briefing is crucial,” Issa-Onilu said. “It will address the concerns raised internationally and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation.”

President Trump’s remarks, made via social media on November 1, included a warning that Christianity was “facing an existential threat” in Nigeria. He claimed to have directed the Pentagon to explore military options to combat jihadist groups allegedly targeting Christian communities.

The Nigerian government has since emphasized its sovereignty and rejected any form of unilateral foreign military intervention. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, earlier stated that any foreign military action must be done in collaboration with the Nigerian government and based on credible intelligence.

Today’s briefing is expected to feature senior officials from the NSA’s office, the armed forces, and other security agencies. They will outline ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency, and provide data-driven insights into the nature of Nigeria’s security challenges.

The federal government has consistently maintained that insecurity in Nigeria affects all citizens and is not confined to any religious group. Officials have also reiterated their openness to international support—provided it respects Nigeria’s territorial integrity and diplomatic protocols.

The press briefing is scheduled for mid-afternoon and will be broadcast live across major media outlets.
