NSC Faults Oliseh’s Remarks on Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles After AFCON 2025

NSC Faults Oliseh’s Remarks on Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles After AFCON 2025

The Nigeria National Sports Commission (NSC) has disagreed with former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh’s recent criticism of Victor Osimhen and the Super Eagles’ performance at AFCON 2025 in Morocco. The remarks, which questioned Osimhen’s leadership and alleged team disputes during Nigeria’s campaign, have stirred debate among fans and football analysts.

Oliseh had suggested that Osimhen’s on-field confrontation with teammate Ademola Lookman negatively affected team chemistry and implied that Nigeria’s third-place finish reflected underlying complacency. However, the NSC, through Director-General Bukola Olopade, said such comments undermine the contributions of current players and fail to recognize their achievements. Olopade emphasized that Victor Osimhen remains one of Nigeria’s most important football icons, whose leadership and goal-scoring impact should be respected.

The NSC further stated that while constructive feedback from former players is welcome, public disparagement of current squad members after an international tournament could harm team morale and fan support. Football analysts have echoed the NSC’s position, noting that Nigeria’s campaign included strong performances, critical goals, and a commendable bronze medal finish, highlighting the resilience of the Super Eagles squad.

This dispute has intensified broader discussions on the role of football legends in critiquing current players, the influence of high-profile athletes like Osimhen on team dynamics, and the need to balance commentary with national support.
