NSCIA appoints 5 new Imams for National Mosque, 2 from Southeast

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has appointed five new Imams for the Abuja National Mosque, marking a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and reflecting regional diversity within the Muslim Ummah.

Notably, two of the new appointees are from the Southeast, emphasising the Council’s commitment to fostering unity across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and regional lines.

The announcement was made during a press conference held on Tuesday at the NSCIA Boardroom, National Mosque Complex, Abuja.

The Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of the appointments and outlining the processes involved.

The President-General of the NSCIA, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, was also recognised for his leadership and support in ensuring fair representation in the mosque’s administration.

The newly appointed Imams are: Prof. Ilyasu Usman (visiting), Prof. Luqman Zakariyah (resident), Sheikh Abdulkadir Salman, PhD (visiting), Barr. Haroun Muhammad Eze (resident), and Prof. Khalid Aliyu Abubakar (visiting).

Their appointments, endorsed by the General Purpose Committee (GPC) and the Expanded General Purpose Committee (EGPC), followed clearance by the National Fatwa Committee.

According to Oloyede, this appointment is part of the ongoing effort to strengthen the Abuja National Mosque, which serves as a key centre for worship, education, and Islamic scholarship.

He emphasised that the inclusion of Imams from diverse regions, including the Southeast, is not only a reflection of the merit-based selection process but also a significant move to unite the Muslim community and represent all sections of Nigeria.

Oloyede explained, “The Council has completed the process of appointing five additional resident and visiting Imams for the Mosque.
