NYSC DG: Why corps members’ N77,000 monthly allowance is delayed

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has clarified that the newly approved increase in corps members’ allowances has not yet been implemented due to delays in the release of funds.

Earlier reports revealed that the Federal Government had approved an increment of the monthly allowance for corps members, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000, effective July 2024.

According to a statement shared by the NYSC via its official Facebook page, this decision was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.

Despite this official announcement, the increase was not reflected in the September payments to corps members, who continued to receive the previous allowance of N33,000 instead of the updated N77,000.

During an interview with the BBC Hausa service, Brigadier General Ahmed explained that although the approval has been granted, the government is yet to disburse the necessary funds for its implementation.

He noted, “Not only the corps members, even our staff members’ salary has been increased about four to five months ago, but it has not been implemented yet. But we are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, but the funds have not been released to us yet.”

Addressing concerns about the timeline for payment, he added, “The information we have did not specify when the new allowance will be paid, but we were assured that their monthly allowance has been increased from 29th July 2024.”
