Obafemi Awolowo’s grandson, Olusegun Awolowo Jr., dies at 61
The Awolowo family has confirmed the passing of Olusegun Awolowo Jr., a distinguished Nigerian lawyer, former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), and grandson of the late nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
In an emotional statement, the family described Awolowo Jr. as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was marked by service to Nigeria, integrity, and unwavering loyalty.
“He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather — steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family,” the statement read. “A painfully loyal servant to Nigeria, he dedicated his life to public service with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment.”

Born on September 27, 1963, Olusegun Awolowo Jr. served as NEPC boss from 2013 to 2021, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening Nigeria’s export development, boosting non-oil revenue, and championing policies that advanced national economic growth.
A respected figure in Nigeria’s public sector, Awolowo was celebrated for his leadership, professionalism, and the legacy he built within one of the country’s most influential families. He was also widely acknowledged as a central figure in the nation’s enduring Awolowo political and legal dynasty.
Awolowo Jr. is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers, adding:
“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
His death marks the end of a remarkable life devoted to public service, national development, and strengthening Nigeria’s economic institutions — leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in patriotism and excellence.
