Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says his meeting with Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was brotherly rather than political.
Tinubu and the former president met behind closed doors at the latter’s Abeokuta home, Ogun State, on Thursday.
A statement on Saturday by Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, quoted the ex-president as saying that he was dissatisfied with reports about the meeting.
The statement said, “The discussion during the visit was more brotherly than political.
“Those claiming to be insiders at the meeting issuing statements on the discussion and those crediting to me statements I had not made are enemies of the visitor and are not doing the visit any good.”
Obasanjo added that at the request of Tinubu, he agreed to no statement from either side.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, had said days after the meeting that the APC presidential candidate was assured of victory by Obasanjo.
The speaker, who was present at the meeting, said Obasanjo made encouraging statements about Tinubu’s aspiration and prayed for the APC candidate.
“Obasanjo spoke at length and we were all happy. He embraced our candidate like a brother, gave him a pat on the back, and prayed for him copiously,” the speaker had said.
