Obasanjo: Stomach infrastructure now more important to Nigerians
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized the importance of “stomach infrastructure” to Nigerians during a critical period while commissioning 136 houses procured by the Sokoto State government from the federal government on Wednesday.
Obasanjo, who holds the traditional title of Yallaban Sokoto, praised the state’s Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his transformative efforts in just one year in office.
Reflecting on his observations since his arrival, Obasanjo said, “When I arrived yesterday (Tuesday), I watched two programmes: the commissioning of a road and the distribution of mechanical items necessary for agricultural business. Governor, after you have taken care of infrastructures, what I call the hard infrastructures, which are the roads, transportation, water, sanitation, and houses, the next important thing, the more important thing, is what we in Nigeria call stomach infrastructure. Personal, food, and health security are more important to Nigerians now.”

Obasanjo encouraged Governor Aliyu to continue working for the betterment of the state and its citizens.
Governor Aliyu revealed in his remarks that the houses were procured for N1.8 billion from the federal government, with an additional N233.2 million spent on perimeter fencing. He also highlighted the challenges his administration faced upon taking office.
“When we came on board, we didn’t inherit a house because the immediate past administration sold out all the government houses without building one. And there is no record of how the houses were sold and where the money is kept,” he said.
