Obi Slams Tinubu After Another National Grid Collapse, Recalls Power Promise
Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Tinubu following another collapse of Nigeria’s national electricity grid, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on its promises of reliable and stable power supply.
In a statement released on his verified X account, Obi reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s 2022 pledge: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.” He said the latest grid failure underscores the ongoing power supply challenges in the country and questions the credibility of the government’s commitments.
Nigeria’s national grid has suffered multiple collapses this month alone, with at least two major breakdowns in January 2026, leaving millions of homes, businesses, and institutions without electricity. Obi highlighted that persistent power outages are hampering economic growth and daily life, creating hardships for citizens who rely on electricity for work, education, and health services.

The former Anambra State governor compared Nigeria’s energy production capacity unfavourably with other nations, noting that while Turkey generates more than 120,000 megawatts, Nigeria struggles with less than 5 % of that capacity, reflecting deep-seated structural issues in the power sector.
Obi also criticised the president for being abroad on a state visit to Turkey amid the ongoing crisis, urging him to prioritise domestic challenges. He called on Nigerians to demand accountability, stressing that leadership should focus on delivering essential services, particularly electricity, to improve the nation’s infrastructure and living standards.
The former LP presidential candidate’s comments add to growing public concern over Nigeria’s unstable electricity supply, which continues to affect industries, schools, hospitals, and households nationwide. Observers say the ongoing grid failures highlight the urgent need for reforms in energy generation, transmission, and distribution.
