Ohanaeze denies warning Peter Obi against 2027 bid
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has disowned a viral social media report claiming it had warned former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, against contesting the 2027 presidential election.
It also denied reports that it cautioned Northern Nigeria against supporting Obi’s perceived presidential ambition.
In a rebuttal issued yesterday, National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, described the claims as “mischief-driven” and “entirely false.”
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide categorically and unambiguously states that such a misleading and mischief-driven statement did not emanate from the dignified apex Igbo body.”
Chukwu described those behind the viral report as “a group of clandestine starving street urchins, who parade a phantom ludicrous brown envelope Ohanaeze, with POS as their address.”

Dr. Chukwu emphasised that the leadership of the current Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which includes “men of integrity like Distinguished Senator John Azuta Mbata as President-General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi as Deputy President-General, and His Excellency Emeka Sibeudu as Secretary-General,” is committed to the unity and progress of the Igbo nation.
“Every rational Igbo indigene and Nigerians in general know that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, led by credible individuals, cannot issue such an ignominious statement.”
He stressed that the organization remains non-partisan and has not taken a position regarding the 2027 presidential election or endorsed any candidate.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo is primarily committed to the general wellbeing of the Igbo nation and national development by extension through justice, fairness and equity,” he stated.
While urging the public and media to ignore the false report, Dr. Chukwu warned against the activities of those he described as “incurable mercenaries” using the Ohanaeze name for political manipulation.
“Ohanaeze therefore calls on the media and the general public to disregard any statement coming from those incurable mercenaries, who are unconscionably parading Ohanaeze brand for the execution of the pecuniary bidding of their political paymasters,” he concluded.
