Olympic qualifiers: Super Falcons in slim victory over South Africa
The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Friday beat South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 1-0 in the battle for the ticket of the football event of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Rasheedat Ajibade converted a 43rd-minute penalty to secure the victory in the encounter in Abuja for the Falcons.
The Super Falcons began the game well, pressing the South Africans at the MKO Abiola Stadium. But the team could not convert many chances.
Following sustained pressure, South Africa’s Niko hacked down Chinwendu Ihezuo in the box.
Rasheedat stepped forward to take and slotted the ball home to give Nigeria the lead.
A combination of poor finishing and brave defending from the opponents denied the Nigerian team the opportunity to score more goals.
The Super Falcons will fly to South Africa for the second leg of the last phase of qualification on Tuesday.
The winner of the two-legged tie will pick the ticket to the Paris Olympic Games.
