Ondo: Jilted husband kills self, sets wife ablaze

In Ondo State, a spurned and disgruntled man has killed himself and razed his wife over unresolved issue involving their marriage.

The man was said to have set himself and wife ablaze in the Ijoka Area of Akure, the State capital.

The couple were said to have been married for a decade and had two kids before the tragic occurrence.

Before the incident, the deceased were no longer living together owing to an undisclosed marital issue.

The incident was disclosed by the state police command on its X handle on Friday.

According to the police, the deceased took the extreme and fatal action against himself and his wife after his entreaties for reconciliation fell on deaf hear as she refused to end the dispute.

To carry out his immolation plan, the husband was said to have lured his estranged wife over to his place to pick up some items, but on getting there the jilted husband pleaded with her to bury the hatchet and let them continue their lives together but declined.

After his plea for reconciliation was rebuffed, the man reportedly then locked the door, douse both himself and the woman with petrol, and set them on fire. He died on the spot.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident, adding that while the husband died, the wife was still in hospital receiving treatment.

Odunlami stated, “They were married and, along the way, had issues that caused them to stay apart. The deceased asked his wife to come over and collect a wardrobe. When she arrived, he began threatening to kill himself but later locked the door so that both of them would die together.

“Using fuel and a lighter, he set himself and the woman ablaze. He died on the spot, while the woman suffered major burns.”
