Ondo Police Arrest Landlady for Allegedly Poisoning Tenant’s 3-Year-Old Child

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested Nafisat Lateef, a 40-year-old landlady, for allegedly poisoning her tenant’s three-year-old child in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, authorities confirmed on Friday.

According to DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Ondo State, the incident was reported on Thursday, February 5, at the Odigbo Police Division by the child’s mother, Rofiyat, 32, both residents of Omifon, Odigbo.

“The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, February 4, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly gave the victim, identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous,” DSP Jimoh said. He added that the act allegedly followed a misunderstanding between the complainant and the landlady.

The police acted swiftly, and through an intelligence-led operation, arrested the suspect and recovered the suspected poisonous liquid used in the attack. DSP Jimoh confirmed that Nafisat Lateef is currently in police custody and has made useful statements, while investigation into the matter continues. The case will be charged to court upon conclusion of the inquiry.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, urged residents to avoid disputes between landlords and tenants, noting that such disagreements can escalate into criminal acts. He reassured the public that the Ondo State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice and urged residents to cooperate with the police by providing timely and credible information, which is critical for crime prevention and public safety.

The case has drawn attention to the need for heightened vigilance and conflict management in landlord-tenant relationships, highlighting the serious consequences of unresolved disputes.
