Only my party can stop me from contesting 2027 presidential election – Atiku
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has hinted of his plans to contest again in 2027 for the president of Nigeria.
He however said he would withdraw from the race should his party zone the position to another region of the country.
He confirmed that an alliance of major political parties and influential politicians was in the works ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections, disclosed that his recent meeting with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was a sign of positive things to come.
He said the meeting could be a launchpad for the possible alliance in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
Atiku met with Obi; former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, in separate visits earlier last week.
He also dismissed the assertions that their alliance would be unable to produce a consensus candidate.

He also said he would happily back a presidential candidate of the South-East extraction should the PDP zone its presidential ticket to the region.
Obi is from the South-East and, with the speculation of his imminent return to the PDP following his meeting with Atiku and other bigwigs of the party likely, he might clinch the ticket.
“I’ve made it clear since last elections that if our party members had a consensus that southeast should produce the candidate, we would all agree. And if our parties also had a similar agreement, then so be it,’’ Atiku said.
Last week, Paul Ibe, media adviser to Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, says Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), frustrated and sabotaged plans by the PDP to zone its presidential ticket to the South-East for the 2023 election.
He said the move effectively led to Obi’s exit from the party.

2027: Ambode’s Lagos gov campaign poster surfaces
2027: Ambode’s Lagos gov campaign poster surfaces
Residents of Lagos State have called on former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to contest the 2027 governorship election, expressing confidence in his ability to drive the state’s development if given a second chance.
The Lagos Residents Association (LRA), a prominent civic group, made the appeal in a statement signed by its President General, Dr. Olumuyiwa Adesanmi. The group urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reconsider Ambode for the party’s ticket, describing his previous tenure (2015–2019) as transformative.
Dr. Adesanmi highlighted Ambode’s achievements in infrastructure, human capital development, and overall transformation of the state, emphasizing the widespread support he still enjoys among Lagosians.

The legacy he left behind in infrastructure, human capital development, and total transformation of Lagos is undeniable. He positively impacted the lives of residents, and we believe he deserves the opportunity to complete the good work he started,” Adesanmi said.
“It is Ambode’s constitutional right to seek a second term, and the events that denied him that opportunity in 2019 were questionable. We are urging him to step forward and contest in 2027,” the statement added.
The association further declared its readiness to support Ambode’s candidacy by purchasing his nomination and expression of interest forms.
“Residents of Lagos are united in their desire for his return. We are ready to back him and ensure his success in the 2027 elections,” Dr. Adesanmi said.

2027 presidency: Atiku hosts Obi in Adamawa
2027 presidency: Atiku hosts Obi in Adamawa
Permutations about the 2027 presidential contest have commenced with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar hosting Peter Obi, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), to a breakfast meeting at his residence in Adamawa State.
There are speculations of another Atiku/Obi ticket coming up in the 2027 presidential election.
Pressure is also being mounted on Atiku to endorse Obi and another strong contestant from the North, to defeat and upstage the incumbent President, Bola Tinubu.
In a video posted on his X handle on Saturday, Atiku is seen with the 2023 LP presidential candidate, walking into a dining area of his house.
In May, Atiku hosted Obi at his residence in Abuja sparking rumours of a possible alliance between both politicians ahead of the 2027 election.
Atiku was vice-president between 1999 and 2007.
He was the standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections — losing in both polls. Obi was his running mate in 2019.

2027 Lagos gov race: Opposition heightens against Seyi Tinubu, Obasa
GOVERNOR Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State still has 30 months to serve, but the polity is already charged as potential aspirants eyeing his seat embark on exploratory footwork.
Those considered to be aspiring for the Alausa Round House on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, include President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu; serving Speaker of the Lagoa State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa; immediate past Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode; and Senator Tokunbo Abiru
The main opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, 2023 Candidate, Abdulaziz Olajide Adediran (Jandor); and his Labour Party, LP, counterpart, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, are still nursing the ambition of governing the state.
Factors that will shape who emerges the candidates of the leading parties and winner of the poll proper include the choice of President Tinubu, indigeneship, religion, zoning, and Governor’s Advisory Council, GAC, of the APC among others.
Religious card
Sanwo-Olu, a Christian succeeded Akinwunmi Ambode, another Christian. By 2027, Christians would have been in the saddle for 12 straight years, which is four years short of the 16 years that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola (who are Moslems) spent.
Thus some are angling for Ambode’s return to complete 16 years for Christians before power returns to Moslems in the state.
Currently, Seyi Tinubu has been receiving a series of endorsement from many groups just as Obasa, the longest serving Speaker of Lagos said he is not too young or inexperienced to run.

2023 power-play
With the benefit of hindsight, Sanwo-Olu’s emergence as governorship candidate in 2019 came as surprise to many after the ouster of the incumbent Governor Ambode by the power bloc in the APC led by the Jagaban himself, now President Tinubu.
Sanwo-Olu emerged as a consensus candidate after Tinubu’s endorsement. The rest is history.
