Osogbo group cites Biblical duty, urges indigenes to defend community

The Osogbo Progressive Youths Movement has issued a strongly worded statement calling on indigenes of Osogbo to unite in defence of the town’s cultural and political interests, describing such commitment as a “biblical mandate”.

In the release dated November 19, 2025, the group’s convener, Comrade Jimoh Oyekola Ajayi, said the town was at a “critical crossroads”, alleging that internal divisions and the actions of some indigenes were weakening Osogbo’s collective standing.

Quoting several scriptures, Ajayi argued that the defence and promotion of one’s community is a divine responsibility. He referenced Jeremiah 29:7, which urges believers to seek the peace of their city, and Luke 19:41, where Jesus expresses sorrow over Jerusalem.

According to him, these passages underscore the need for loyalty, unity and civic responsibility.

“Unity is not optional. A divided house cannot stand,” he said, citing Psalm 133:1 and Mark 3:25. “Any indigene who undermines Osogbo or elevates other towns above their own is acting in contradiction to this biblical principle.”

The group warned that neglecting one’s community attracts moral consequences, referencing 1 Timothy 5:8 and Proverbs 18:21, which speak to responsibility and the power of words.

Ajayi said the movement would no longer accept “apathy or betrayal”, urging citizens at home and in the diaspora to defend Osogbo’s heritage and support its progress.

“Osogbo deserves loyalty, love and protection,” the statement added. “Those who stand with the city will shape its future; those who work against it will be remembered by history.”

He called for renewed commitment from traditional leaders, political actors, youth groups and civic organisations to ensure unity and development.
