Osun Trains 1,000 Youths, Women on Waste-to-Energy to Tackle Unemployment

The Osun State Government has trained 1,000 youths and women on waste-to-energy conversion in a strategic move to address unemployment while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth in the state.

The beneficiaries, drawn from 30 local government areas, participated in the initiative tagged “Power from Plenty: Turning Local Waste into Clean Energy for Osun Communities.”

Speaking at the programme, the Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, said youths and women possess complementary strengths essential for community development and climate resilience.

“Youths bring ideas, women bring innovation and communality. They are also the groups most affected by the impacts of climate change. In Osun State, we have chosen to prioritise them not only in adaptation and mitigation, but also in revenue generation and green entrepreneurship,” she said.

Prof. Obuaku-Igwe explained that the training represents the second batch of the programme, following an inaugural session held in August.

“While the first batch focused on introducing the basics of waste-to-wealth, this phase concentrates on the technical complexities of generating energy from waste,” she noted.

She added that the initiative aligns with the state’s long-term plan to institutionalise climate governance, including the deployment of climate desk officers across all local governments and ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

“Our objective is to create a coordinated system for data mapping, information synthesis and climate planning across the state,” she said.

According to her, Osun State is also adopting a circular economy model, alongside nature-based solutions and sustained climate action advocacy, to drive sustainable development.

“This training is our anchor project among several initiatives. Beyond promoting sustainability, it has the potential to generate carbon revenue and strengthen the state’s green economy,” she added.
