The arrest came days after a video posted on January 3 by the victim’s sister went viral online. In the footage, she alleged that the suspect forced his way into the family’s home during the Christmas period, threatened the minor with a knife, and sexually assaulted her.
The video also accused officers at a police station near the Government House in Owerri of demanding ₦100,000 from the victim’s family before agreeing to record the girl’s statement—an allegation that triggered widespread condemnation across social media platforms.
Reacting to the claims, the police command disclosed that it has identified and detained the officers allegedly involved in professional misconduct in the handling of the case. An orderly room trial has been scheduled to begin on Monday, January 12, 2026, in accordance with existing police regulations.
“The command has identified and detained the police officers alleged to have been involved in professional misconduct in the course of handling the case,” the statement said.
The Imo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency and accountability, assuring the public that justice will be served for both the victim and anyone found culpable in the matter.
