Over 200 Killed as Deadly Landslide Hits Mining Community in Congo
More than 200 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating landslide that struck a mining area in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, triggering one of the deadliest mining disasters in recent years.
The tragedy occurred at a coltan mining site in Rubaya, North Kivu Province, after heavy rainfall weakened the soil and caused massive sections of the mine to collapse. Scores of artisanal miners, including women and children, were buried under mud and debris.
Local officials said the death toll may rise, as many victims are still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by poor access roads, lack of heavy equipment, and the fragile security situation in the area.

Survivors were rushed to nearby health centres, while seriously injured victims were transferred to hospitals in Goma. Residents described scenes of panic as the landslide swept through mining pits where workers were operating with little or no safety protection.
The affected mining area is largely controlled by armed groups, with mining activities often carried out informally under dangerous conditions. Authorities have ordered a temporary suspension of operations at the site to prevent further loss of life.
The disaster has renewed concerns over unsafe artisanal mining, weak regulation, and the impact of climate-related extreme weather in resource-rich but conflict-affected parts of eastern Congo.
Government officials have expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while calls grow louder for urgent reforms to improve mining safety standards and protect vulnerable communities.
