Oyo state govt dismisses viral post on entertainment tax as fake
The Oyo State Government has debunked a viral social media post claiming that it plans to impose taxes on social events such as weddings, burials, and naming ceremonies.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government described the post as “fake” and aimed at maligning the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
Oyelade clarified that any official document announcing levies or taxes in the state must contain specific features, including a Revenue Code for payment and the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board. He noted that the viral post failed to meet these requirements.

“Equally important is the official address, which must read Oyo State Internal Revenue Office, but this was clearly missing in the mischievous post,” the statement added.
The Commissioner further warned members of the public to be wary of false information, especially as the next general elections approach. He said political opponents might employ various tactics to discredit the achievements of Governor Makinde’s administration over the past seven years.
Oyelade also cautioned bloggers and media outlets against spreading unverified information, urging them to always confirm the authenticity of stories before publishing.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and responsible governance, assuring residents that no such “entertainment tax” exists in Oyo State.
