Oyo town agog as Alaafin Confers ‘Okanlomo of Yorubaland’ Title on Seyi Tinubu
The ancient town of Oyo is in festive mood as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, prepares to confer the prestigious chieftaincy title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Sunday that dignitaries had begun arriving at the venue ahead of the colourful traditional ceremonies, which have drawn national attention.
Also slated to receive a traditional honour is Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District, who will be conferred with the title of Obaloyin of Yorubaland. Yari currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation.

Among the dignitaries already present are former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Others include members of the House of Representatives led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, members of the Federal Executive Council, as well as traditional rulers from across Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
Also in attendance are the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu; the Statistician-General of the Federation, Mr Adeyemo Adeniran; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Olawale Edun; and Senator Teslim Folarin.
The event has also provided a boost for petty traders, who are recording brisk business around the venue, while popular Fuji musician Saheed Osupa provides musical entertainment.
Historically, Oyo, a prominent pre-colonial Yoruba kingdom, was founded about a thousand years ago by Oranmiyan and later emerged as one of the most powerful states in the Yoruba-speaking region of West Africa.
