President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
An influential Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that his chances in the 2027 general election could be seriously threatened if the Federal Government fails to grant a presidential pardon to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The group said Kanu’s continued detention remains a major political and emotional issue in the South-East, stressing that releasing him would help ease tensions, improve security, and foster national reconciliation. According to Ohanaeze leaders, the matter has gone beyond legal arguments and now carries deep political implications ahead of 2027.
They argued that many Igbo voters view Kanu’s detention as symbolic of marginalisation, warning that failure to address it could trigger strong resistance to Tinubu’s re-election bid across the South-East and among Igbo communities nationwide.
The warning comes amid increasing pressure from South-East lawmakers, traditional rulers, and civil society groups calling on the President to exercise his constitutional powers of mercy. Members of the House of Representatives from the South-East have repeatedly appealed for a political solution, describing a pardon as a step towards peace, unity, and de-escalation of insecurity in the region.

Igbo leaders in the diaspora, particularly in Europe and North America, have also joined the call, urging the Tinubu administration to prioritise dialogue over prolonged detention. Some prominent political figures believe granting Kanu freedom could significantly boost the ruling party’s acceptance in the region ahead of 2027.
Despite the growing appeals, opinions remain sharply divided. While supporters insist that Kanu’s release would calm agitation and restore trust in the Federal Government, critics argue that such a move could undermine the judicial process and embolden separatist movements.
IPOB itself has also expressed mixed reactions to political lobbying, maintaining that Kanu’s release should be treated as a matter of justice rather than political bargaining.
Analysts say the Nnamdi Kanu issue, alongside broader concerns about insecurity and marginalisation, could play a decisive role in shaping voter sentiment in the South-East during the 2027 elections. As pressure mounts, all eyes are on President Tinubu to see whether he will opt for clemency, dialogue, or continued prosecution.
