PAYE Tax Cut Boosts FG Workers’ Take-Home Pay
The Federal Government PAYE tax reduction has begun to positively impact federal civil servants’ take-home pay, with many workers receiving higher net salaries following the implementation of Nigeria’s new tax reform framework.
Multiple reports confirm that PAYE deductions were reduced in January salaries, resulting in increased disposable income for workers whose taxes are deducted at source. The development is part of the Federal Government’s broader tax reforms aimed at easing the financial burden on workers amid rising living costs.
Speaking on the reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, explained that the new structure prioritises low- and middle-income earners, ensuring they either pay significantly less tax or are fully exempt under the revised PAYE system.

According to him, the PAYE tax cuts are already reflecting in workers’ payslips, especially across the federal public service, and will continue as payroll systems fully align with the new tax laws.
The reforms are anchored on recently introduced legislation, including the Nigeria Tax Act and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, which seek to simplify tax processes, eliminate multiple taxation, and make revenue collection more equitable.
Beyond PAYE reductions, the Federal Government has also announced targeted tax exemptions and reliefs for vulnerable income groups and small businesses. Officials say these measures are designed to increase workers’ disposable income, stimulate economic activity, and improve tax compliance nationwide.
However, the implementation has not been without controversy. Some lawmakers previously called for a suspension of the new tax laws, citing procedural concerns. Despite this, the Federal Government insists the reforms are legal, necessary, and already delivering tangible benefits to Nigerian workers.
With early signs showing improved take-home pay for FG workers, the government maintains that the reforms will strengthen household finances while laying the foundation for a more efficient and transparent tax system.
