PDP Faction Loyal to Wike Moves to Strengthen Unity Ahead of National Congress

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has scheduled its national convention for March 28 and 29, 2026, in Abuja, where it will elect a new National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party.

The announcement followed the faction’s 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, held on Monday in Abuja. According to a communique signed by Abdulrahman Mohammed, factional National Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, and Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary, the NEC approved a timetable for party congresses nationwide: ward and local government congresses in February and state congresses in March, leading up to the national convention.

The NEC extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee and affected state and zonal caretaker committees until all congresses are conducted. It also directed the Caretaker Committee to activate convention subcommittees and commence logistical, administrative, and consultative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible convention.

The NEC affirmed the legitimacy of the Mohammed-led Caretaker Committee, describing it as the only lawful national administrative organ of the party empowered to act as the NWC pending the national convention. Members at all levels were urged to remain disciplined, loyal, and committed to party unity.

The decision follows a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan nullifying the PDP’s previous November 2025 convention, which had elected Taminu Turaki as National Chairman. The court confirmed that the Caretaker Committee remains the sole recognized NWC and barred Turaki and other officials from acting as national officers.

At the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting, factional BoT Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa described the PDP as being at a watershed moment, calling for leaders to prioritize the party’s collective interest over personal ambitions. Mohammed thanked the BoT for supporting stability efforts and praised Minister Wike for his backing, which strengthened the committee’s resolve to reposition the party ahead of the national convention.

The NEC and BoT declarations underscore the Wike-aligned faction’s commitment to party unity, legal compliance, and a properly conducted national convention.
