Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District, has claimed that Peter Obi’s victory over President Bola Tinubu in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election was largely driven by public anger over the naira redesign policy introduced under former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele. Speaking on Monday during an interview on TVC News’ Beyond the Headline programme, Oshiomhole argued that the cash scarcity triggered by the policy alienated voters from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and created the conditions that worked in Obi’s favour. The former Edo State governor and ex-APC national chairman maintained that Obi’s performance was not a reflection of personal political strength but rather a reaction to economic difficulties Nigerians faced under the final months of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He insisted that the former Anambra State governor emerged from an “unusual situation” rather than a genuine political realignment.

“I have said this, but many people may not agree. Obi was produced by an unusual situation,” Oshiomhole said. “When a ruling party decided to destroy itself as to make anybody running election on its platform unelectable. It is that confusion that brought those votes to Peter Obi”. Oshiomhole traced the discontent to the naira redesign policy implemented during the final months of Buhari’s administration, saying it “virtually confiscated people’s money” and turned voters against the APC in Tinubu’s home state. “Former President Muhammadu Buhari suddenly changed the colour of the currency and virtually confiscated people’s money,” he said.

According to the senator, the severe scarcity of cash forced many residents to spend long hours at automated teller machines (ATMs) and later depend on Point-of-Sale (POS) operators to access their own money, fueling resentment against the government. “People had money in the bank, but they can’t access it; they go to ATM machine, they queue all night to get ₦10,000, and after a week, even the ATM were dried of cash,” Oshiomhole recalled. He added that many Nigerians also had to pay exorbitant charges to POS operators to obtain cash during the period, compounding their frustration. “People started going to the Point-of-Sale, POS. And I remember one statement somebody made, which captured the situation, that why will you queue all night to withdraw ₦5,000? Then you go and queue for two nights to get 10 litres of PMS, and then those people expect that on election day, you will queue to vote for them?” he said.

He maintained that the resulting dissatisfaction translated into votes against the APC, enabling the Labour Party candidate to emerge victorious in Lagos. “It is this anger that, in my view, deliberately created by the president before Tinubu that made people vote against the APC in Lagos, making Peter Obi to defeat President Tinubu,” Oshiomhole said. The senator also suggested that the events surrounding the naira redesign were linked to the political ambitions of former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele. He alleged that the policy emerged after Emefiele was unable to pursue his reported presidential ambition, describing the move as an attempt to “choke and suffocate the system” that created confusion within the political system. Oshiomhole had earlier in February 2023 claimed that the CBN deceived Buhari into approving the naira redesign policy, alleging that the bank sold an anti-corruption motive to the President, particularly the need to curb vote-buying during the elections, which made him approve the policy.

The former Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President also recalled conversations with constituents who blamed the government for the hardship caused by the cash shortage. “A woman in my village told me, ‘You said I should keep my money in the bank, but when I went to collect it, they said there was no money. At the POS, they deducted ₦2,000 from ₦5,000. How do I survive?'” he recounted. The senator maintained that the policies responsible for the hardship were not part of the APC’s political agenda. “I told her what Buhari was doing at that time was not APC policy. It was that anger that influenced the outcome of the election,” he said.

The naira redesign policy remains one of the most debated decisions of the Buhari administration. Introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria in late 2022, the policy aimed to replace high-denomination naira notes and encourage the return of cash held outside the banking system. However, its implementation led to severe cash shortages across the country, disrupting business activities and making it difficult for many Nigerians to access money for daily transactions. The cash crisis was rooted in the CBN’s October 2022 decision to redesign the ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes, with the rollout triggering severe scarcity in the weeks before the February 25, 2023 poll, sparking protests across several states as citizens struggled to access legal tender. Oshiomhole’s latest remarks add to the continuing debate over the political consequences of the naira redesign policy and its impact on the outcome of the 2023 general elections, particularly in Lagos, where Peter Obi recorded one of his most significant electoral victories.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday formally welcomed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara back into his political fold, declaring that “there is no sin in politics” and insisting that the governor had “no other choice” than to return to the political family that produced him. Speaking with journalists after inspecting ongoing road projects across the Federal Capital Territory, Wike said Fubara’s decision to publicly align once again with his political camp was a step in the right direction, adding that the reconciliation would strengthen support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election. “I said during my last media chat that he had no other choice but to return to the same political family that produced him. I have now been informed that he has made that declaration publicly, and we welcome him,” the minister said. “Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward.” The FCT Minister dismissed suggestions that Fubara’s return amounted to forgiveness after months of political disagreement, saying politics should not be viewed in terms of wrongdoing. “I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics, there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that. Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognising that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision.”

Wike recalled that he had predicted Fubara’s return during his last media chat, saying the governor had no alternative but to return to his political roots. “Our doors are open. Everyone is welcome for us to work together. There is no better alternative. We will all work together to move the state forward,” he said. The minister also said Fubara’s public declaration of reconciliation would strengthen efforts to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid. “He has publicly stated that he has returned to where he started, and we receive him with an open mind. There is nothing to hide. We will all work together to ensure that we deliver the votes President Tinubu needs for his re-election,” Wike said. Fubara had, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Rivien Medical Industry project in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State last week, announced that he had returned to Wike’s political family. The governor declared support for the Rainbow Coalition, endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, and urged his supporters to back all candidates of the coalition. “The time of war is over. It is now time for peace, and this peace is taking us to another level,” Fubara told supporters. The rapprochement caps a crisis that repeatedly tested Nigeria’s federal structure. The feud erupted months after Fubara took office in May 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, pitting him against Wike loyalists who dominated the State House of Assembly. It escalated into a prolonged standoff over control of the legislature, the local government system, and the state’s finances.

On March 18, 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the 32-member Assembly, and installing a retired naval chief, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, as sole administrator. The presidency cited a “total paralysis of governance,” security concerns over pipeline vandalism, and a legislative deadlock. The action drew more than 40 court challenges over its constitutionality and became one of the most contested executive decisions of Tinubu’s tenure. The emergency ran its full six months. During that window, the administrator conducted local government elections on August 30, 2025, in which the All Progressives Congress won 20 of the 23 councils, tightening the party’s grip ahead of 2027. President Tinubu lifted the emergency and reinstated the elected officials on September 18, 2025. Fubara’s realignment has since gathered pace. He formally joined the APC in December 2025, then withdrew from the party’s governorship primary in May 2026 after the national secretariat declined to clear him, paving the way for Hon. Kingsley Chinda to secure the ticket. His endorsement of the coalition now places the governor and his predecessor on the same side for the first time since 2023.

The minister spoke while leading senior officials of the FCT Administration on an inspection of major road projects, including the ongoing ISEX Road Corridor and the nearly completed Apo-Karshi Road, both regarded as strategic infrastructure expected to unlock development across large sections of the capital city. Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on the ISEX Road, noting that construction commenced immediately after President Tinubu flagged off the project during the third anniversary commissioning of landmark infrastructure across the FCT. “This road was flagged off during the third anniversary commissioning. We came here today to assess the progress made since the flag-off, and as you can see, the contractor moved to site immediately after the ceremony,” he said. According to the minister, the contractor has assured the administration that the project will be ready for commissioning in December. “I believe them. They are committed to handing over this project by December. We will be very happy because this road will open up the entire area for development,” he stated. The minister also inspected the long-delayed ISEX Road project, describing it as one of the last major inherited infrastructure projects yet to be completed in the FCT. Awarded in 2014, the 10-kilometre road, complete with interchanges, has remained unfinished through successive administrations. Wike disclosed that the contractor had undertaken to complete six kilometres of the road and key interchanges before the end of the year, provided adequate funding is released. “We have appealed to the Minister of Finance because the project is already captured in the national budget. If part of the funds is released, the contractor will be able to meet the deadline,” he explained. He described the project as critical to the transformation of Abuja, saying discussions with the Federal Ministry of Finance would continue until the required funds are made available. “This project is very important to us because it will significantly change the landscape of the Federal Capital Territory.”

The minister said the near completion of the Apo-Karshi Road and the expected delivery of the ISEX Road would mark the fulfilment of one of the administration’s major promises — to complete inherited projects rather than abandon them. “The Access (ISEX) Road will be the last major inherited project awarded by a previous administration to be completed. Once we achieve that, we can confidently say we have fulfilled our promise to complete projects inherited from previous administrations instead of allowing them to become abandoned.” Reflecting on the state of infrastructure when the Tinubu administration assumed office in 2023, Wike recalled that abandoned projects littered the capital city, slowing development and denying residents essential infrastructure. “The FCT is the nation’s capital, and having abandoned projects everywhere does not present a good image. When we assumed office in 2023, abandoned projects were scattered across the territory. That situation slowed development, delayed infrastructure delivery and affected communities.” Wike assured that between eight and ten major road projects across the FCT will be completed before the end of the year. The target includes the long-delayed Apo-Karshi road project, initially awarded in 2010 that suffered over a decade of delays. Work is now progressing rapidly under new management following the termination of the former contractor’s engagement over non-performance and its re-award to another company. At the Bwari-Kubwa corridor, the minister acknowledged the difficult terrain confronting engineers on site but cautioned contractors against seeking to push back agreed delivery dates, assuring that the administration would ensure prompt release of funds to enable completion of the road before the onset of heavy rains. Responding to questions on the political calendar and how it might affect project timelines, Wike insisted that governance remains a continuous process driven by President Bola Tinubu’s mandate. “Has the tenure of Mr President ended? Certainly not. His first tenure will be ending precisely May 29, 2027. So, if that is the case, it means that the work has also not ended,” he stated. The minister stressed that continuity in governance, not the pursuit of personal legacy, defines responsible leadership. “Leadership requires continuity. Some people assume office and say they will only focus on projects they initiated. That is not leadership. Good leadership is continuing projects that are vital to the development of the city, projects that transform the landscape and improve the economy.”

National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda describes the August 15 poll as a litmus test and rehearsal for the 2027 general elections

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, on Tuesday inaugurated a 292-member National Campaign Council for the party’s Osun State governorship election campaign, describing the upcoming poll as a critical litmus test that will determine the party’s preparedness for the 2027 general elections. The inauguration ceremony took place at the Transcorp Hilton Event Centre in Abuja, formally launching the APC’s campaign machinery for the Osun off-cycle governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. The council, chaired by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Hope Uzodimma, brings together the party’s top leadership in a comprehensive bid to reclaim Osun State from the ruling Accord Party.

Addressing the team at the inauguration, Professor Yilwatda emphasised the strategic importance of the Osun election, noting that it would be the only governorship election preceding the next general elections. He described the poll as a rehearsal for the political machinery the party is preparing for 2027, stressing that winning the Osun election is non-negotiable for the APC. “Today’s exercise is one of our major tests. Coming to the South-West, this is the last governorship election before the 2027 general election. This will be our litmus test. It will measure our level of preparedness for 2027,” Yilwatda declared. “This will be our practice ground. It will be our rehearsal for the political machine we are preparing for 2027. That is why winning the Osun election is a must for the APC. The party will mobilise resources, coordinate our people, and move into Osun in large numbers after this inauguration.”

The APC National Chairman further explained that members of the campaign council were carefully selected across geopolitical zones to enable the party to reach out to prospective voters in Osun State across ethnic divides. He outlined a comprehensive grassroots strategy involving governors from the South-West, South-South, and South-East taking responsibility for one senatorial district each, alongside National Assembly members, House of Assembly members, and local government chairmen conducting person-to-person campaigns across the state. Governors from the North were also expected to join with their respective local government chairmen and legislators to intensify grassroots engagement.

Yilwatda emphasised the importance of house-to-house campaigns, stating that every resident of Osun State—whether indigene or non-indigene—has an APC member who can personally persuade them to support the party. He noted that the committee was carefully selected to represent all tribes, languages, and shades of opinion, from polling units to every stakeholder represented. He also called on the Directorate of Women Affairs to intensify efforts in mobilising women door-to-door to secure victory in the election.

In his remarks, Governor Hope Uzodimma thanked the APC National Working Committee for the confidence reposed in the team and assured that they would work diligently to regain Osun State for the APC. The PGF Chairman declared that the campaigns would be issue-based and evidence-driven, resting on the achievements of the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the enduring performance of progressive governance across states. Uzodimma appealed to party leaders to bury their individual differences and work together with the party candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, to ensure victory. “Public responsibility is not a declaration; it is a covenant demanding sacrifice, discipline and measurable results. We therefore accept this assignment as a solemn obligation to our great party, to our democracy and to the good people of Osun State,” he stated.

According to the campaign council chairman, the assignment is clear: to listen to the people of Osun State, speak to their hopes and aspirations, earn their confidence and convince them to vote for the APC and its governorship candidate. “He is a tested, competent and people-centred candidate whose vision is anchored on prudent leadership, inclusive prosperity and renewed confidence in government,” Uzodimma said of Oyebamiji.

The party candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, vowed that he was in the race to win, declaring that the people of Osun State could not afford another four-year tenure for the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party. Oyebamiji reported that across engagements with traditional rulers, private sector operators, market men and women, students, artisans, religious leaders, women and youths, one message had been consistent: the people of Osun State can no longer endure another day of the current administration beyond November 27, 2026. “With less than two weeks to the election, I am delighted to report to our leaders that the people of Osun State have received our prosperity message with uncommon excitement. The state is ready for the All Progressives Congress to complete the rescue mission and return Osun to the path of progressive governance, responsible leadership and sustainable development,” Oyebamiji declared.

The National Campaign Council is composed of eminent party leaders, governors, members of the National Working Committee, principal officers of the National Assembly, ministers, federal and state legislators, and other key stakeholders drawn from across the country to drive the party’s campaign towards victory. Serving as co-chairmen alongside Uzodimma are Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Kabir Masari, serves as Deputy Chairman, while Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, is Secretary of the Council.

To ensure seamless coordination and effective execution of campaign activities, the party also constituted 12 specialised sub-committees covering Election Planning and Management; Finance and Resource Mobilisation; Contact, Grassroots Engagement and Mobilisation; Logistics and Campaign Management; Monitoring and Compliance; Protocol; Media and Publicity; Security; Youth Mobilisation; Special Interest (Persons with Disabilities) Mobilisation; Women’s Mobilisation; and Secretariat functions. Governor Hope Uzodimma chairs the Election Planning and Management Committee, while Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu heads the Finance and Resource Mobilisation Committee. Former Minister of State for Education, Felix Abdullahi, chairs the Media and Publicity Committee, with APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka serving as Secretary. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, was appointed Secretary of the Security Committee.

Political observers regard the Osun governorship election as a major electoral contest capable of influencing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, August 15, 2026, for the Osun State Governorship Election. The APC’s comprehensive campaign structure reflects the party’s determination to reclaim the state and use the election as a template for its national campaign strategy in 2027.
