Pedro Obaseki Stripped, Beaten, Paraded to Oba’s Palace in Benin City
Suspected thugs in Benin City on Sunday assaulted and publicly humiliated Don Pedro Obaseki, a media consultant and Chief Executive Officer of Hosamudia Farm, following allegations that he made comments perceived as disrespectful to the Benin Monarchy.
The incident occurred at Uwa Primary School, Benin City, where Obaseki had gone to play football. Obaseki, who is a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was reportedly confronted, stripped, and beaten by the assailants before being forcefully taken to the Oba of Benin’s Palace.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers accused him of making uncomplimentary remarks during a meet-and-greet organised by Godwin Obaseki in Europe, which some groups claimed were offensive to the traditional institution in Benin.

In a viral video circulating on social media, Obaseki was seen kneeling at the palace gate while those who brought him there described him to palace guards as an “Oghion Oba” (enemy of the Oba). He was stripped of his shirt and shorts, leaving him in his pants and knee protector, without shoes or slippers, as he was led into the palace premises.
Some palace chiefs, who addressed the suspected thugs in the Bini language, stated that the Oba of Benin was on his way to the Holy Arousa Church for a thanksgiving service marking the end of the Igue Festival, and urged calm.
One of the chiefs reportedly warned against causing unrest, saying that the day was not meant for conflict and that anyone who considered himself an enemy of the Oba would face the consequences.
The incident has since sparked public outrage and renewed debate over mob actions, respect for traditional institutions, and the rule of law in Edo State, as authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the assault.
