Peter Obi Vows to Quit Presidency After One Term if Elected in 2027

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview scheduled to air on News Central Television, Obi declared that he would not remain in office beyond four years under any circumstance, insisting that leadership should be based on service and national stability rather than personal ambition.

“I want to be a one-term president because of stability. I would not stay a day longer than four years, even with a gun to my head,” Obi stated.

The former governor used the interview to launch fresh criticism against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the Federal Government of worsening Nigeria’s economic challenges through excessive borrowing, poor economic management and failure to address insecurity.

According to Obi, Nigeria is currently experiencing one of its most difficult periods economically and socially, with millions of citizens struggling under rising inflation, hunger and unemployment.

The former presidential candidate argued that the country’s debt profile has continued to rise without corresponding improvement in living conditions or infrastructure development.

He also criticised the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity across several parts of the country, lamenting that many communities continue to suffer attacks while political leaders remain disconnected from realities on the ground.

Obi said a responsive president must show leadership by visiting affected communities and engaging directly with victims during periods of crisis.

The former Labour Party candidate further faulted the government’s agricultural policies, claiming that food importation and inadequate support for local farmers had contributed to worsening food insecurity nationwide.

According to him, Nigeria possesses enough human and natural resources to achieve economic recovery if leadership focuses on production, accountability and responsible management of public resources.

Obi came third in the 2023 presidential election behind former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Tinubu, who emerged winner of the poll.

Since joining the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress before later moving to the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, Obi has repeatedly insisted that he would honour a one-term arrangement if elected president in 2027.

During a Twitter Space hosted by Parallel Facts in June 2025, Obi argued that any southern candidate elected president in 2027 should leave office by May 2031 in line with Nigeria’s informal zoning and power-sharing arrangement between the North and South.

According to him, the rotational presidency principle remains important for national unity, fairness and political balance.

Obi has also defended his one-term position by citing global leaders whose legacies endured despite spending limited years in office.

Referencing former South African president Nelson Mandela, Obi said true leadership is measured by impact and integrity rather than longevity in power.

He also mentioned former American presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy as examples of leaders remembered for their achievements rather than years spent in office.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has dismissed Obi’s latest declaration, with presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga reportedly questioning the credibility of the former governor’s promise.

The latest comments have further intensified political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election, as opposition figures continue consultations aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
