Phone snatchers kill nurse in Kaduna

Zaria, Kaduna State — The healthcare community in Zaria is mourning the loss of Hadiza Musa, Deputy Head of the Maternity Unit at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, who was killed in a violent robbery attempt on Saturday evening.

According to her husband, Hamza Ibrahim Idris, who works in Abuja, Hadiza had called him earlier that day to inform him of her plans to visit a hair salon and an Islamic chemist in Filin Mallawa, Tudun Wada. Their last communication was around 6 p.m., after she left the chemist. Subsequent attempts to reach her were unsuccessful.

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations suggest that Hadiza boarded a commercial motorcycle around 6:30 p.m. and was later attacked by assailants who attempted to snatch her mobile phone. She sustained severe head injuries and showed signs of physical struggle, including bruising on her hands.

Passersby found her unconscious near Mallawa Eid ground and rushed her to a nearby clinic. She was later referred to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, where she was confirmed dead.

Hospital Secretary Abdulkadir Balele Wali described Hadiza as a dedicated and professional nurse who had reported for duty the previous day and worked late into the evening. “Her death is a profound loss to the hospital and the community she served,” he said.

Hadiza’s death comes just three months after the passing of her sister, whose three children she had adopted. She leaves behind six children—three biological and three adopted.

As of press time, Kaduna State Police spokesperson Mansur Hassan could not be reached for comment.
