Police arrest key suspect of fake news in Edo
The Nigeria Police Force has taken a strong stance against the spread of fake news and disinformation that could undermine public trust and threaten national security.
Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Friday said on December 8, 2024, operatives arrested Destiny Ekhorutomuen, a 38-year-old suspect, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State.
Ekhorutomuen is accused of creating and managing multiple social media accounts to spread false and inflammatory content designed to incite hostility towards the Police.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its unwavering zero tolerance for actions that jeopardise the nation’s stability or tarnish the reputation of law enforcement agencies and government institutions.

The police said the deliberate dissemination of false information not only erodes public trust but also undermines national unity and poses significant security risks.
The Force has issued a stern warning against the misuse of social media and other platforms to spread fake news or stir unrest. Such actions are criminal and punishable under Nigerian law.
The police urged the public to act responsibly when sharing information to safeguard the peace and unity of the nation.
The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining law and order, and will continue to pursue and prosecute individuals or groups that engage in activities threatening the peace and security of the country.
