Police arrest officer caught extorting varsity student in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command said its officer caught on video extorting motorists at checkpoints has been arrested.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, the erring officer was caught on camera extorting a student of Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, a district in Ijebu Ode Local Government Area
Odutola disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the command acted on the complaint lodged by Soyemi Funmilola on January 13, 2024, and upon the report, a thorough investigation was conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department and the officer was found guilty of misconduct.
The police spokesperson noted that the money extorted has been recovered and marked as exhibits.
Odutola said: “The inspector, rank and file have been detained for an orderly room trial, and the officer involved has been issued an official query, as directed by Commissioner of Police Alamutu Abiodun, with the provost department overseeing the disciplinary proceedings.”
She further added that the family of the 24-year-old complainant had been contacted.
