Police confirm arrest of Seun Kuti in Lagos

The police have arrested and detained Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti in Lagos over his reported assault of a police officer whose video went viral.

The musician was promptly detained after he turned himself in on Monday morning, spokesman for the Lagos police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this in a tweet.

He stated, “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company with his lawyer and family representative.

“He has been placed under arrest in line with the law.

“The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”

Recall that the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, ordered for his arrest on Saturday, May 13, after the video of him assaulting a police officer went viral.

The police visited his house on Sunday morning to pick him up but they did not find him there.

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, on Sunday, said he is Seun’s counsel and promised that the singer would turn himself in on Monday.
