The police authorities in Abuja have said they have no record that an activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was shot by its operatives in the Federal capital Territory on Monday.
Sowore’s aide had said the activist he was wounded during a gunshot on Monday by the police at the Unity Fountain while he was trying to gain entry into the area.
The police stated that some protesters who had converged on the fountain at 8.30am were only denied entry into the arena to forestall any break down of law and order.
Spokesperson for the FCT police, Mariam Yusuf, said this in a statement, insisting that Sowore was never shot by the police.
The statement said, “Contrary to the speculation, police operatives professionally restored calm at the Unity Fountain following attempts by a group of protesters to incite public disturbance.
“The protesters who went on the rampage were resisted by police operatives in order to prevent them from causing a breakdown of law and order. “There is no record of such incident as at the time of this report.”
Sowore has had a series of encounters with law enforcement agents since 2020 when he was arrested and detained for months by the Department of State Services after calling for a nationwide protest.
