Police Detain 52 After Anti-Kidnapping Protest Turns Violent in Ekpoma

The Edo State Police Command has arrested 52 suspects in Ekpoma following incidents of looting, vandalism, and violence during a recent protest against rising kidnapping and insecurity in the area. The arrests were confirmed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who clarified that the operation targeted criminal elements and not peaceful demonstrators.

The unrest, which occurred in Esan West Local Government Area, began as a protest by residents and students demanding stronger action against kidnappers. However, it escalated into violence, resulting in destruction of property, including shops and the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma.

Addressing public concerns, the IGP emphasized that the police support lawful and peaceful protests but will act decisively against looting, vandalism, and unlawful behavior. Some of those arrested are reportedly students from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), though authorities insist they were involved in criminal acts during the unrest.

The suspects were remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Edo State, with proceedings adjourned to February. Governor Monday Okpebholo has intervened to release some detained students, easing tensions in the community.

The Ekpoma unrest highlights ongoing frustrations over security challenges in Edo State, where kidnapping and armed robbery remain major concerns. The government has previously taken action against suspected kidnappers by sealing or demolishing hideouts in Ekpoma and surrounding areas.
