Police intervene as supporters mob factional leader Lamidi Apapa
Supporters of the Labour Party on Wednesday attacked a factional National Chairman of the party, Mr Lamidi Apapa, and prevented his press interview at the Abuja presidential election tribunal.
Apapa was mobbed by the youths that were at the court to witness proceedings in the petition filed by the LP presidential candidate Peter Obi challenging the outcome of February 25 presidential election.
Apapa, while stepping out of the courtroom, made attempt to address the media and had positioned himself before the waiting cameras, after Obi’s lead counsel, Dr Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), finished speaking to newsmen on what transpired during the court session.
Just as Apapa was getting set for questions, a group of youths that identified themselves as “Obidients”, pushed him away from the cameras, insisting that he lacked the right to speak for the party.
In the commotion that ensued, with Apapa being pushed around, his ‘Agbada’ was torn and someone removed his cap.
It took the intervention of armed security operatives to pull the factional LP, who appeared helpless, away from the mob.
He was thereafter taken into protective custody by policemen attached to the court.
Meanwhile, the Presidential Election Petition Court has adjourned till Friday, May 19, the pre-hearing of the petition by Peter Obi against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.
