Police Rescue Seven Kidnap Victims of Kaduna Easter Church Attack

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the rescue of seven victims abducted during the Easter Sunday church attack in Kaduna State, as security agencies intensify efforts to free those still in captivity.

According to police spokesperson, DCP Anthony Placid, the victims were rescued during a coordinated security operation and are currently receiving treatment in hospital. He said they are in stable condition and awaiting reunion with their families.

The operation followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who ordered the immediate deployment of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Shehu Umar Nadada, to Kaduna State after the attack.

Police said the incident occurred on April 5, 2026, when armed bandits attacked worshippers at churches in Ariko community near Gurara Dam. The attackers targeted both the Evangelical Church Winning All and St. Augustine Catholic Church, opening fire on congregants.

At least five people were killed during the attack, while about 14 others were abducted, triggering widespread concern and condemnation.

In response, a joint operation involving the police, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS) was launched. The effort, led by DIG Nadada, combined intelligence gathering and ground operations, resulting in the rescue of seven victims.

Authorities say operations are ongoing to rescue the remaining abducted victims and apprehend those behind the нападение. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to support security efforts.

The Kaduna church attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting places of worship in the region. It comes barely two months after a similar attack in Kurmin Wali community in Kachia Local Government Area, where several worshippers were abducted during a church gathering.

Security experts warn that continued bandit attacks in Kaduna State highlight the need for sustained and coordinated security operations to protect vulnerable communities.

In summary, the rescue of seven kidnap victims in Kaduna marks a significant breakthrough, but authorities say more work remains to ensure the safe return of all abductees and prevent future attacks.
