• Bandits demand N60m
The police say two of the abducted students of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna State have been rescued.
This came as abductors of the students are demanding the sum of N60m as a ransom for the release of others.
Mohammed Jalige, spokesperson for Kaduna State Police Command, said the two students were rescued on Wednesday evening around Rijanna area along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.
Jalige said the students had been taken to a police medical facility where they are currently undergoing medical examination.
“Yes, two of the students were rescued this evening along Kaduna-Abuja highway and they are undergoing medical examination,” he told TheCable in a phone call.
A total of 121 students of Bethel Baptist secondary school in the Chikun LGA of Kaduna State were abducted from their hotels by bandits on July 5.
Last week, the police rescued one of the students inside a forest, while two were rescued today, thereby bringing the number of those rescued to three.
As the bandits are asking for N60m for the release of those still in captivity, President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Israel Akanji, has said no ransom will be paid for the release of the abducted students.
He said for the past 166 years, the Baptist Church has operated secondary schools in Nigeria, and “it has never happened that our children would be taken away.”
Akanji said, “As a church, we do not believe that people who are free should be taken and then we should go and pay for them,” Akanji had said.
“We are not looking at paying ransom as the way for the release of the children.
“That is the position. We do not believe in that; we do not practise it. We have not been doing that.”
