Police sergeant in court for shooting wife dead on Valentine’s Day

A police sergeant, Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela, of the South African Police Service (SAPS), appeared before the Protea Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, February 20, for the murder of his wife.

It is alleged that Mahlalela fatally shot his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, also a member of SAPS, on 14 February 2025 at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto.

The accused was allegedly heard by family members arguing with the deceased about her not having slept at home the previous night, and they later heard a gunshot.

The accused disappeared from the scene, taking along a minor child.

He was on the run until he handed himself over to Moroka SAPS on 18 February 2025, whilst the minor child was found at his aunt’s place.

The case was postponed to 25 February 2025 for a formal bail application hearing.
