Police uncover plot to cause mayhem during Eid El-Fitr in Kano

The Kano State Police Command has announced the discovery of individuals concealing their identities under certain Islamic sects to instigate violence during the Eid el-Fitr festival.

The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, disclosed this information during a meeting with Islamic clerics and representatives from the five emirate councils on Monday. He assured that the police have taken swift action against criminals who disguise themselves among law-abiding citizens to cause harm before, during, and after the Eid el-Fitr celebrations.

Commissioner Gumel highlighted Kano as the only state where none of its citizens were held captive by kidnappers or bandits, attributing this achievement to the vigilance of security agencies.

He stated, “We have identified individuals hiding under the guise of the Qadiriyya Islamic sect to foment discord. We have engaged with the leader of the sect, Sheikh Qaribullah Nasiru Kabara, who has disputed them and authorized their arrest for disrupting peace.”

Additionally, the police commissioner revealed that intelligence units had uncovered politicians dissatisfied with current circumstances or overlooked for appointments, intent on causing unrest.

“I have instructed police officers to apprehend anyone found with weapons or attempting to sow discord among the populace,” he added.

Representing the Emir of Bichi, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Bashir Albasu commended the police commissioner for maintaining peace in Kano. He acknowledged Kano’s diverse population and continuous influx of traders and recognized the city’s susceptibility to crime. Nonetheless, he affirmed the commitment of the five emirate councils to support security efforts for ongoing peace.
