Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas
Political earthquake in Taraba as Governor Kefas set to dump PDP for APC
Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has confirmed that he will formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, November 19, marking a significant political shift in the North-East state.
Speaking with journalists on Saturday, Kefas said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was motivated by what he described as the “destiny of the Taraba people,” hinting at a major political realignment ahead of the ceremony.
“There is going to be a major shift and alignment on November 19,” he said. “I will officially transition from PDP to APC. It is a movement that has to do with the destiny of Taraba people. We expect many visitors on that day.”
Kefas’ defection adds to the growing list of PDP governors who have crossed over to the ruling APC in 2025. Others who have switched camps this year include Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Peter Mbah (Enugu) and Douye Diri (Bayelsa), signaling an ongoing shake-up in the nation’s political landscape.
Elected in 2023, Kefas won the Taraba governorship with 257,926 votes, defeating Muhammad Yahaya of the NNPP and Emmanuel Bwacha of the APC.
Since 1999, Taraba has been governed exclusively by PDP administrations — making Kefas’ move one of the most consequential political defections in the state’s history.
