Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf
Political Realignment: More Commissioners Quit Gov Yusuf’s Cabinet
Several commissioners and top officials have resigned from Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s cabinet, deepening political tensions following the governor’s defection from the NNPP to the APC.
Among the high-profile exits are Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Umaru (rtd.), former Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, and Nasiru Sule Garo, the Commissioner for Special Duties, who submitted resignation letters citing shifts in political loyalty. Other senior officials stepping down include Laminu Rabiu, former Director-General of the Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Hassan Danbappa, Managing Director of the Kano State Roads Maintenance Agency (KARMA), and Shafa’atu Ahmed, former Chief Governor’s Reporter at the Ministry of Rural and Urban Development.

The wave of resignations is linked to a broader realignment within Kano State politics, as many of the officials remain loyal to the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Analysts say the departures reflect deepening intra-party divisions and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this month was accompanied by the entry of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and numerous local government officials, consolidating his position within the ruling party. However, not all cabinet members supported the move, prompting several to resign before or during the governor’s transition ceremony.
The ongoing cabinet shake-up signals a significant political recalibration in Kano, with former allies of the governor stepping aside while others realign to the APC’s growing influence in the state. Political watchers say these developments will influence party structures and election strategies as Kano prepares for upcoming polls.
