Political shock in Ogun, Obasanjo’s daughter Iyabo declares for governorship under APC 

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Obasanjo made the declaration during an interview on Segun Odegbami’s Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7FM, monitored in Abeokuta on Saturday, where she confirmed her return to active politics after years away from elective office.

The former Ogun commissioner ruled out any plan to return to the Senate or accept another commissioner role, stating that her focus is solely on the governorship.

She said, “I’m not going back to the Senate, and I’m not returning as commissioner. The only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship. We have started that journey, and we are very serious and dedicated to it.”

Obasanjo also confirmed her decision to join the APC, explaining that her return to politics was largely influenced by pressure from supporters who had been mobilising for her candidacy.

According to her, a group of associates had been working for about two years to convince her to re-enter politics, insisting she was the most suitable candidate for the state’s top job.

“I did not bring the group together; they reached out to me about a year ago and urged me to come back,” she added.

Her declaration signals an early build-up to the 2027 governorship contest in Ogun State, with political alignments already beginning to take shape ahead of the election cycle.
