President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Imo State, with his plane landing at Sam Mbakwe Imo Airport, Owerri, 9.30am on Thursday.
Buhari was received at the airport by the South-East governors, led by the Chairman of the South-East Governors, and the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, with host governor, Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, and other Igbo leaders.
The President is expected to commission some landmark projects in the state and meet with Igbo leaders and other Igbo groups.
Several supporters were seen at the airport jubilating over the President’s visit.
The President’s visit to the state generated some controversy as members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB vowed to sabotage the visit.
However, the Nigerian police force vowed to crush people who want to cause trouble during and after the President’s visit.
The police issued the warning after IPOB had given a sit-at-home order in the state and four other South-East states in apparent disapproval of Buhari’s visit.
The pro-Biafra group’s Director of State, Chika Edoziem, announced the protest in a Radio Biafra broadcast, saying, “Buhari is not welcome to Imo on Thursday, September 9, 2021.”
