Princess Diana’s runaround Ford Escort auctioned $764,000

A black Ford Escort RS Turbo, driven by Diana for about three years was sold on Saturday to a British buyer at an auction.

The late Princess of Wales drove the car from August 1985 to May 1988.

The Ford Escort was sold at the auction for $764,000.

She was photographed with the RS Turbo Series 1 in front of Chelsea stores and Kensington restaurants.

Diana preferred to drive her own car and had a member of the Royalty Protection Command (S014) in the passenger seat.

The car is considered unique as the first and only black RS Turbo Series 1, as agreed by S014 and the Ford PR department for reasons of discretion, instead of the only model made in white.

The Ford plant’s Special Vehicle Engineering Department was tasked with supplying the car and they installed a regular five-slat front grille to help with the “stealth redesign.”

There was also a secondary mirror for the protection officer with a radio in the glove box, with the cable still visible.

Designer Elizabeth Emanuel recalls igniting spark for Princess Diana’s love of fashion.

The car has only 24,961 miles on the clock.

Arwel Richards, a classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, which organised the sale, said it was “an incredible result” with “fierce bidding” and a packed house.

“The car exceeded all expectations,” he said, adding that it was a “top 10 world record for its type.”

Richards said, “The sale price of 764 mil dólares plus 12.5% buyer’s premium shows that a one-off Ford can sell for supercar money.”

With the buyer’s premium included, the a total of $844,000 was paid for the car.

The Royalty Protection Command (SO14) was concerned that when Diana swapped her silver Escort Ghia for a red 1.6i Cabriolet, it was too high-profile. They encouraged her to swap it for a stealthier car, but Diana wanted the new Escort RS Turbo.

The late Harry Calton at Ford PR dealt with SO14 and he suggested making a black RS Turbo. In turn, SO14 suggested two extra cars, one as a decoy and a third for another royal.

Geoff Fox at SVE remembers that he did not have much to do with the cars which were painted black on the line. Car Marketing Planning scheduled the cars and SVE advised the body moulding supplier, Marley Foam and the Rear Spoiler supplier, Phoenix to paint their parts black.

It was Diana’s last Escort; she briefly borrowed a Sapphire Cosworth one weekend before moving on to Jaguars and then Audis.

Her husband, Prince Charles, is believed to have commissioned a unique Tickford-customized Granada Ghia Estate fitted with Aston wings.
