Prof. Samson Duna: Church Attacks in Nigeria Driven by Political Motives

The National President of the Boys Brigade of Nigeria (BBN), Professor Samson Duna, has said that the rising attacks on churches and Christian communities across Nigeria are largely politically motivated, rather than random acts of violence.

Speaking in a recent interview, Prof. Duna argued that many of the violent incidents targeting Christian worshippers, clergy, and church properties are orchestrated to intimidate communities and influence political outcomes in certain regions. He noted that perpetrators often exploit ethno-religious tensions for political gain, with Christian-majority areas disproportionately affected.

According to Prof. Duna, the timing and locations of these attacks suggest a deliberate strategy to create fear and instability, disrupt community cohesion, and undermine the political influence of certain groups. He emphasized that understanding the political dimensions of religious violence is critical for crafting effective security and social interventions.

The BBN president further urged the government, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to work together to address underlying political motives, strengthen security, and promote dialogue between communities to prevent further attacks. He warned that ignoring the political drivers of violence could perpetuate cycles of insecurity and deepen societal divisions.

Prof. Duna’s remarks come amid a surge of attacks on churches in various parts of Nigeria, which have left many communities traumatized and raised concerns about religious and political stability.
