Proprietor’s 3 children die after eating suspected poisoned beans
A tragic incident has shaken a community in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, as three siblings lost their lives after allegedly consuming beans purchased from Garriki Market.
The unfortunate event occurred on Tuesday in Agu-Uwani, Akwuke, raising concerns over the safety of beans sold in markets across the state. The victims were the children of Mr. Callistus Egbo, the proprietor of Elohim Primary and Secondary School, who hails from Nenwe in Aninri Local Government Area.
According to reports, the family ate the beans on Tuesday evening. Shortly afterward, the children fell gravely ill, resulting in the death of one that same evening, while the other two passed away the following day, Wednesday.

In a video that circulated in several WhatsApp groups, which was viewed by SaharaReporters on Friday, it was revealed that the father, Callistus Egbo, is also critically ill and receiving treatment at a private hospital in Enugu.
Though there has been no official medical report confirming the exact cause of death, it is widely believed that the family suffered from food poisoning, potentially caused by contaminated beans.
This heart-wrenching incident has deeply affected the community, igniting serious concerns about food safety and proper handling practices. Many in the area have since avoided consuming beans and bean-based foods such as Akara and Moi Moi.
A source familiar with the incident expressed the community’s apprehension: “It was indeed a big tragedy that the incident befell the family. Since the incident three or four days ago, nobody is eating beans in our area, not even Akara and Moi Moi. Go to the Garriki Market and the shops in the streets and see if there is anybody selling Moi Moi or Akara?
“We are praying that the man will not die so that his wife, who was away when they ate the meal, will not suffer another loss,” the source added. “May the souls of the departed children rest in peace
