Protest erupts over Kano Emirate crisis
Protest in Abuja over new Emir of Kano
A group of demonstrators took to the streets in Abuja on Friday, raising concerns over the dissolution of five Kano emirates by Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration.
Carrying placards, they urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating crisis to prevent further unrest in the state.
The protesters, organised under the banner of the Northern Nigeria Peace and Development Foundation, voiced their discontent at what they perceive as a political vendetta and abuse of power by Governor Yusuf.
They expressed worries about the implications of destabilizing the traditional institution and called for urgent action to restore peace and order in Kano State.

The dissolution of the emirates came shortly after the passage of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, leading to the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
Protesters accused Governor Yusuf of manipulating the state legislature to achieve his political objectives, disregarding the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
Abdullahi Muhammed Saleh, the coordinator of the protest, highlighted the governor’s track record of what he described as anti-people and anti-democratic actions.
Saleh emphasized the need for President Tinubu’s intervention to address the crisis and restore the autonomy of the traditional institution in Kano State.
In calling for swift action, the protesters appealed to national leadership to prevent further deterioration of the situation and ensure the stability and unity of Kano State.
