Protest: Report gunshot wounds, FCT police tell medical personnel

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has urged medical personnel to report any individuals with gunshot wounds to the police.

This follows a confrontation between police and hoodlums who exploited the hunger protests to carry out extortion and assaults on innocent citizens in the Lugbe area of Abuja.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said that hoodlums took advantage of the protests on Thursday to block the Lugbe end of the Shehu Musa Yaradua Expressway, leading to a gunfight with police officers. She noted that many of the criminals escaped with gunshot injuries.

In a statement, Adeh reminded medical personnel of their obligations under the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017 to provide necessary medical assistance to such patients while also reporting them to the authorities.

The Commissioner of Police warned against using the protests as a cover for criminal activities such as armed robbery, assault, and vandalism. He assured residents that security forces are on high alert to maintain law and order and protect citizens’ rights and property during the ongoing demonstrations.
