Protests in Lagos, Edo over economic hardship
There was a protest in Lagos on Monday over the economic hardship in the country.
Some members of civil society groups also in Edo State took the streets of Benin City, the state capital, to protest the rising cost of living.
Take It Back Movement, a human rights group, mobilised its members for the protest, which started in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos.
The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions in the Ojuelegba area and other parts of Lagos State.
The group had earlier declared a protest for Monday and asked its members to join the two-day protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the economic crisis gripping the country.
But Lagos Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, said on Sunday the command would not tolerate the disruption of commercial activities during the planned protest.
He warned that protesters who infringed on the rights of other Nigerians would be punished.
In Benin, members of the civil society groups carried placards with captions such as “End Economic Hardship”, “FG End the Hunger in Nigeria Now” showing their grievances against the government.
The nationwide protest declared by the NLC is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Department of State Services (DSS) had called on the NLC to shelve the protest, while the federal government said the planned demonstration is in contempt of a court order restraining the union from embarking on an industrial action.
