Rail: Lagos govt slashes red line fare from N1,500 to N1,000

Lagos State Government has announced a 30 per cent reduction in the fare of its Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line.

The state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, disclosed this just as he inaugurated the newly constructed Abule Egba Bus Terminal, a key infrastructure project designed to enhance public transportation in the state.

This is contained in a statement obtained by newstrends.ng on Tuesday. It stated that with the new fare, a trip between Agbado and Oyingbo would now attract N1,000 as against N1,500 before the announcement.

The statement by Head of Corporate Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mr Kolawole Ojelabi, quoted the governor as saying, “We have looked at the numbers and have therefore decided to have 30 per cent reduction on the fare paid on the Red Line. This means that a trip from Agbado to Oyingbo will now cost N1,000.”

The governor said the fare reduction was aimed at encouraging wider adoption of the Red Line and providing some relief to commuters amidst current economic realities.

The Red Line commenced passenger operations on September 15, 2024 with six trips daily but increased to nine trips a day on February 10, 2025.

At the commissioning of the terminal, located along the Oshodi-Abule Egba Expressway, and strategically positioned to complement Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) operations along the Oshodi-Abule Egba corridor, Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of the new terminal in improving connectivity and easing commuting challenges for residents of the area and Lagos at large.

“This Abule Egba Bus Terminal is a testament to our administration’s commitment to providing efficient and accessible public transportation for all Lagosians,” the governor stated.

“It will serve as a vital hub, seamlessly integrating with the BRT network and offering a comfortable and organized transit experience.”

The governor highlighted the impact the bus terminal would play in commuter services with the Quality Bus Corridor project (QBC), now under construction, and the planned expansion of the BRT system.

This, he added, would play a crucial role in the future extension to Sango.

He reiterated his administration’s focus on developing integrated multimodal transport solutions that would address the growing transportation needs of the state.

Some of the state dignitaries present at the event are Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Olabode Agoro; Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, who represented the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi; Chairman, Agbado-Okeodo Local Council Development Area, Hon. Oladapo Famuyiwa; Chairman, Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, Hon. Johnson Babatunde, and Chairman, Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, Hon. Hameed Tijani.
